Western Alliance for Restoration Management (WARM) Graduate Student Fellowship Announcement

The goal of WARM is to build a future workforce in mine reclamation by providing students with on-theground, real-world experience in site assessment, remedial option evaluation, stakeholder engagement, and environmental regulatory framework. WARM is excited to announce the third year of its fellowship program to bring opportunities to students and contribute financially to their education. WARM will allocate fellowships to graduate students studying relevant fields at the following Colorado universities: Western Colorado University, Colorado Mesa University, Colorado State University, and the Colorado School of Mines.

Graduate Student Fellowships

Fellowship potential is up to $15,000, to be awarded to recipients in two installments: up to $5,000 in the first year and up to an additional $10,000 in the second year. Second year funding is contingent upon the Fellow’s performance and their commitment to completing a masters project or thesis with WARM in the field of mine reclamation/sustainable mining. These projects and theses will be developed collaboratively with WARM and its network of faculty and industry professionals.

Graduate students who have completed their first year of study may apply for the fellowship if their masters project or thesis is related to mine reclamation/sustainable mining. Successful applicants will receive funding as second-year students, but will only be eligible for one year of financial support.

Fellowship students are expected to do the following:

• Participate in a reclamation course

• Participate in field trips to network with professionals and learn about mine reclamation

• Participate in at least two regional mining and reclamation conferences to learn about the field and represent WARM throughout the course of graduate school career.

• Assist and/or oversee recruitment of additional students to the WARM network

• Assist and/or oversee social media outreach for the organization

• Assist and/or oversee maintaining and updating the WARM organization website

• Assist and/or oversee creating newsletters, brochures, posters, and other publications for outreach

• Attend a monthly meeting with WARM Administrator, the WARM VISTA (if applicable), and other WARM education professionals

• Attend WARM Board of Directors and Advisory Board Meetings

• Collaborate with other WARM Fellows and students to achieve shared goals

Second year students are expected to complete their master’s project or thesis within WARM’s mission and needs. The project/thesis will be identified at the end of the student’s first year with the deliverables outlined by the Fellow, their mentor or Advisor, and the WARM Administrator. Students are expected to attend and engage in team meetings and all major events during this time well.
